After any major Holiday, such as Sukkoth, Simhath Torah and Pesah, we eat and drink a lot and possibly end up doing things that are inappropriate. We know that as a result, we are told that it is good to fast on Monday, Thursday and Monday, the next month. That is, the month after Nissan or the month after Tashri.
There is something else that I would like to mention, however, concerning food. In the Parasha of Bereshith, we learn that Adam and Hawa (Adam & Eve) committed the first sin by eating the forbidden fruit. As a result the Zohama of the Nahash (impurities of the serpent) are in our souls and we have to get rid of it. In the Gemara of Pesahim it says that when something not Kosher is cooked in a pot, KeBol'o Kakh Polto (the way the issur [forbidden food] entered the pot, it must be expelled the same way). If it was done over fire then it requires fire to remove it, or if it was done through boiling then you must do Hagh'alah (purging).
So too our souls, in order to reject the impurities of the Nahash (snake), we must do it through eating because we absorbed it through eating. In order to do this, we have to be certain that whatever we eat is not only 100% Kasher, but must check it for worms or any other issurim. We must ensure that we are fully authorized to eat it and that there is no hint of Gezel (stealing). When we recite the Berakhoth (blessings) we have to recite them with the appropriate intent. We must also know that since the Satan knows that we failed in the matter of eating, it tries to make us stumble in the matter of eating. We must be very careful because the Yeser Hara' (evil inclination) comes us and tells us to do things that are inappropriate because it knows that it can succeed as far as food is concerned. So we have to fight that.
When we are eating we must study and speak words of Torah at the table. We have to watch how we behave and must not get angry and the like. And this is how we do the Tiqqun (rectification) for the sin of Adam and Eve.
