ATorahMinute.com is a project of Midrash BEN ISH HAI where you can learn Torah anytime. It will send you a short Daily Halacha or daily Torah by Rabbi Ya'aqob Menashe.

Rabbi Ya'aqob Menashe often draws his inspiration for his Halakhoth (Halachot) and pearls of Torah from the Ben Ish Hai, Hakham Yoseph Hayyim, 'a"h. In addition, the daily bulletins include a wide variety of sources: Shulhan Arukh (Shulchan Aruch), Kaf Hahayim (Kaf Hachaim), Mishnah Berurah (Mishna Brura) and many other sources.

Entering a Synagogue, but not for prayer

Rabbi Ya'aqob Menashe
Sunday, June 14, 2009/Siwan 22, 5769
If someone needs to enter a Synagogue or a Beth Midrash (study hall), for a purpose not connected with prayer or Torah study, such as to call someone, he should enter and first read a Mizmor of Tehillim (Psalm), or some other words of Torah.

After that he may go call the person he was looking for. If he doesn't know how to read, he should enter and pause a while there, either standing or sitting. This is because pausing is also considered to be a Miswah (Mitzvah), as it says in Tehillim, "Ashrei Yoshbei Bethekha" (happy are those who dwell in Your house). Dwelling also means pausing a while.
