Understanding the first blessing of the 'Amidah

Rabbi Ya'aqob Menashe
Sunday, June 28, 2009/Tammuz 6, 5769
We are continuing with the Kawwanoth (intents) that we should have when reciting the 'Amidah. The very first Berakha (blessing) has an important intent that we should be aware of.

Concerning the words "Elo-kenu, WeElo-kei Abothenu", Rabbenu the Ari z"l says in Sha'ar Hakkawwanoth, that a person must have in mind that we are willing to die in order to sanctify G-d's holy name. This is in line with the intent that we have when reciting the Shema', where we also have the intent of being prepared to give up our lives for the sanctification of His holy name.

This is hinted at when we say the words "Elo-kenu, WeElo-kei Abothenu" which means "our G-d and the G-d of our patriarchs", that we are giving our souls over because we believe that He is our own special and only G-d, and that we, His servants, give over our lives for the unification of the sanctification of His holy name.
