The Shulhan 'Aruch, quoting the Gemarra, states that after leaving the Synagogue one should go to the Beth Midrash to study Torah. This is because, at the time, a Synagogue was only for prayer and a Beth Midrash was only for the study of Torah. One who does this has the merit to receive the Shechinah (G-d's holy presence).
The Tur states that one should go to the Beth Midrash before going to work, and have a set time to study the Torah. This is based on Raba who states in the Gemarra of Shabbath that when a person is judged on his judgement day, he is asked whether he conducted his business affairs faithfully (honestly) and whether he set aside a fixed time for the study of Torah.
The Gemarra of Sanhedrin states that a person is judged first on his study of Torah.
