ATorahMinute.com is a project of Midrash BEN ISH HAI where you can learn Torah anytime. It will send you a short Daily Halacha or daily Torah by Rabbi Ya'aqob Menashe.

Rabbi Ya'aqob Menashe often draws his inspiration for his Halakhoth (Halachot) and pearls of Torah from the Ben Ish Hai, Hakham Yoseph Hayyim, 'a"h. In addition, the daily bulletins include a wide variety of sources: Shulhan Arukh (Shulchan Aruch), Kaf Hahayim (Kaf Hachaim), Mishnah Berurah (Mishna Brura) and many other sources.

Some aspects of the fast start earlier

Rabbi Ya'aqob Menashe
Monday, July 19, 2010/Ab 8, 5770

The fast of Tish'ah BeAb (9th of Ab) starts at night and ends the following day after the emergence of three stars. On the eve of Tish'ah BeAb one may eat till close to sunset. However, once sunset comes one is forbidden to eat.

Not only is eating forbidden once sunset comes, but all items that are forbidden on Tish'ah BeAb are forbidden from sunset. Therefore, one must have finished cleaning one's teeth and removed one's leather shoes before this time.

Studying Torah, however, is not done past midday (Halachic time) on the eve of Tish'ah BeAb, except for those portions that one is permitted to study on Tish'ah BeAb itself. In years when the eve of Tish'ah BeAb falls on Shabbath, the prevalent custom is to permit the study of Torah even past midday.

If there is a Milah or Pidyon HaBen on the eve of Tish'ah BeAb, the Se'uddah (festive meal) should be held before midday.
