Rich, Powerful and Alone

Rabbi Ya'aqob Menashe
Sunday, January 22, 2012/Tebeth 27, 5772

פנה אלי וחנני כי יחיד ועני אני "Turn towards me and be gracious to me because I am alone and poor" (Psalms 25:16). How could King David, 'a"h, say that he is alone and poor? He had brothers and as a king, would never sit on his own, therefore, he was not alone. Also, being a monarch, he had treasures of gold and silver and, therefore, was clearly not poor.

The nature of a human being is that if he is wealthy or powerful, he relies on his wealth or strength for everything. A poor person, on  the other hand, has nothing and no one to rely on except G-d. So when something bad befalls a poor man he automatically turns to G-d for help and salvation. If a powerful and wealthy man relies on himself, how much more so will a King, who has ultimate power and wealth, rely exclusively on his strength and wealth and not consider his Maker.

King David, who had much power and riches, always considered himself alone, as if he were any other simple person, and totally poor. When he says, "Turn towards me and be gracious me", he is asking G-d to rest His Shekhinah (holy presence) on him constantly, and to show him grace at all times, because he considered himself as a poor person with nothing and no one to rely on except G-d. A truly powerful message to all of us.
