If on a cold Shabbath one forgot to turn on the heating, is one permitted to ask a non-Jew to turn on a heater? This question is answered in Dibrei Mordekhai based on the ruling by the Shulhan 'Arukh, as follows:
If one has small children in the house, it is permitted. The same rule applies for the elderly or for a Holeh (one who is sick). The definition of a child for the purposes of this Halakha is a child for whom the cold will have a negative effect. For an adult, however, it is forbidden.
If the weather is extremely cold, it is permitted to have a non-Jew turn on the heating even for an adult. It this case, however, one should hint to the non-Jew to do so and not state it explicitly. If the non-Jew does not understand the hints, one may tell him explicitly.
