Why did Hashem command the Children of Israel to donate fifteen different types of materials for the Mishkan (Tabernacle)? Wouldn't it have been more appropriate to build the entire Mishkan from gold, or at the very least from gold and silver? What is the reason for commanding the children of Israel to bring copper, linen, rams' skins and other cheap substances? Isn't this act belittling and degrading the value of the Mishkan?
The Ben Ish Hai in his holy book "Adereth Eliyahu" brings the following explanation. We all know that the act of "giving" can be done on different levels. There is giving and there is giving. There are those who donate with a happy heart and very willingly, and there are those, on the other hand, who give with a heavy heart and grudgingly.
Had Hashem commanded us to donate gold exclusively - what would those who find it difficult to put their hands in their pockets do? It is possible that some would not have given at all, while others would feel forced to give and would act with a lack of love and desire.
That is why Hashem, in His infinite wisdom and love for us gave the opportunity to donate copper, linen and the like. To give every single person from Bene Yisrael a chance to practice the act of giving with rejoicing of heart and happiness. This way every single individual in the entire nation, with none excluded, took part in the building of the holy Mishkan.
