The prophet Micha prophesied the following: "According to the days of your coming out of the land of Egypt I will show him wonders." In other words, when Mashiyah comes, we will witness the same miracles and wonders as the ones we experienced in Egypt.
However, our Rabbis of blessed memory tell us that in the future redemption that we are awaiting, we will witness even greater wonders than those of the redemption from Egypt. Where then is the similarity between the two redemptions?
Hakham Yoseph Hayyim tells us in his work Ben Ish Hayyil, that the similarity between the two redemptions are in the reasons which brought about the Geulla. If we are able to study the reasons which made the redemption from Egypt possible, we will have a key to open the gates to our future redemption.
The Ben Ish Hai quotes a statement of Ribbi El'azar Haqappar. Ribbi El'azar said that the Jewish people in Egypt held dearly onto four commandments - refraining from adultery, guarding their tongues from gossip (Lashon Hara'), did not change their Hebrew names and kept the holy tongue. Hakham Yoseph Hayyim explains that these four commandments are performed by two parts of the body -- the first one by the eyes and the other three by the tongue.e must realize that Hashem created us with a holy body. The eyes and tongue are extremely precious tools. They have a purpose that is spiritual and holy - to perform the Miswoth and study the Torah. Undoubtedly, we can use these tools, the eyes and tongue, for our physical needs as well. However, special care must be taken not to abuse them. We must guard our eyes from looking at the wrong things and our mouth from speaking evil.
Now we can appreciate our forefathers in Egypt who sanctified their precious eyes and tongue. As for us, their descendants who are anxiously awaiting the redemption, we were given the necessary key to solve the puzzle. How? How do we bring about the Geullah (redemption)?
My dear friends, during the holiday of Passover let us pay close attention to our eyes and mouths. Let us make a conscious effort to elevate our actions and sanctify ourselves. And let us continue to grow and grow and never stop.
May we merit to see the Redeemer and witness the Geullah speedily in our days. Amen.
