The performance of any commandment is considered to be a complete act, when the three following areas are covered: speech, action and intent. How do we acquire this level when lighting the Hanukkah candles? We read the blessings (speech) and we light the candles (action). Let us explore the intent that we should have during this time.
Hakham Sasson Mordekhai Moshe 'a"h explains that while darkness symbolizes our sins, the performance of the Miswoth illuminate our soul and the entire world. When we light the Hanukkah lights, we should repent and regret bringing darkness into the world. We should strive to increase the spiritual light.
This was the act of Deborah the Judge, who was a prophetess as well as a leader of the Jewish people. She prepared special thick wicks for her husband to deliver to the Temple in Shilo. She wanted her wicks to be used for lighting the Menorah. Her wicks were so thick, that they were actually torches; when they were burning they produced immense light.
In addition to creating a magnificent physical light, she also had a special intention to increase the unification of G-d's holy name. Her entire act was for the sake of Heaven, "Le'shem Shamayim." Therefore, the Holy One Blessed be He said to her, "You intended to increase my light, (therefore) I will illuminate you with the power of prophecy".
My dear friends, just as we add one more candle every night, so too, may each of you grow spiritually by expanding the light around you. May your performance of the Miswoth be complete on all three levels with a pure intent to multiply your own personal light, thereby expanding the light in the entire universe.
